Local insights, insider tips and practical information to help you plan your journey.
Where are FORESTIS and ODLES LODGE in the Dolomites?
Both retreats sit high on the Plose mountain above Brixen, in South Tyrol, northern Italy. FORESTIS is surrounded by forest at around 1,800 metres, with spectacular views towards the Dolomites. ODLES LODGE lies a little higher, at approximately 2,000 metres, where four secluded chalets offer an even greater sense of escape. Innsbruck, Bolzano and Verona are useful arrival gateways, and we'll arrange private transfers and the journey between your mountain stays.
When is the best time to experience the Dolomites' high mountain pastures?
Late June through September is particularly special for this journey, when the higher trails are generally accessible, Alpine herbs and wildflowers fill the meadows and cattle graze in the summer pastures. September brings clearer autumn light and the traditional Almabtrieb, when livestock return to the valleys, sometimes welcomed with music and celebrations. October offers beautiful golden forests, although mountain huts and some higher routes begin closing for winter. We'll plan your journey around the season, the working mountain communities and suitable walking conditions.
Why was FORESTIS originally chosen as a mountain sanatorium?
In 1912, the Austrian monarchy began developing a tuberculosis sanatorium on this sunny plateau, drawn by its mountain air, spring water and sheltered position overlooking the Dolomites. The project was interrupted by war, and the building eventually found a very different future. Today, it forms part of FORESTIS, where the same natural surroundings inspire the hotel's approach to rest and wellbeing. It's a fascinating connection between the mountain retreats of the past and the way we seek restoration today.
What is Wyda, and what makes the FORESTIS Tree Circle Ceremony special?
FORESTIS draws inspiration from Celtic traditions in its approach to movement and wellbeing. Wyda combines gentle movement, breathing and concentration, while the Tree Circle Ceremony is a distinctive spa ritual using the scents and textures of local woods, warm stones, sound and massage. You'll choose from trees such as larch, spruce, stone pine and mountain pine, each bringing a different sensory character to the experience. No previous experience is needed, and it's a lovely way to begin your time in the mountains.
What makes South Tyrol's Alpine pasture traditions so special?
For generations, farming families have taken their animals into the high pastures during summer, following the fresh grass and cooler mountain air. Known locally as Almen, these meadows are still part of working mountain life, with traditional huts where herders tend animals and, in some places, make cheese and butter. Walking through the pastures with your local guide, you'll discover how the short Alpine summer shapes the work, food and traditions of the people who live here.
Can we meet local herb growers and discover what grows in the Dolomites?
Yes. At Schmiedthof, on the slopes of the Plose, the Frener family grow between 60 and 80 varieties of herbs and aromatic plants at around 1,400 metres. Flowers and leaves are gathered by hand at the right stage of growth, then carefully dried and made into teas, herbal salts and other preparations. Depending on the season, we'll explore opportunities to walk the gardens with the growers, discover what's ready to harvest and taste some of their mountain creations.
Do I need to be an experienced hiker to enjoy this journey?
You don't need to be an expert mountaineer, but a reasonable level of walking fitness will help you enjoy the higher trails. Your guide will tailor the routes to your experience and comfort level, from gentler forest and meadow walks to more demanding mountain ascents. The sunrise hike involves an early start, uneven terrain and potentially cold conditions, even in summer. We'll discuss your preferences before planning the route, and your guide will always make the final decision based on weather and mountain conditions.
What's the difference between staying at FORESTIS and ODLES LODGE?
FORESTIS is a beautifully designed mountain hideaway with a destination spa, Forest Cuisine restaurant and suites overlooking the Dolomites. ODLES LODGE offers a more secluded experience, with just four self-contained chalets among the high forest. Each has its own kitchen, and breakfast is delivered to your door, while a small shared spa includes a pool, sauna and steam bath. We recommend combining the two so you can enjoy the comforts of FORESTIS before settling into the freedom and quiet of your own mountain lodge.
Are the experiences private, and is everything arranged for us?
This is a tailor-made Signature Journey, with accommodation, guided walks, local encounters, spa experiences and transfers thoughtfully brought together around you and your travelling companions. Private mountain guiding and specialist visits can be arranged, while some hotel activities and facilities are shared with other guests. We'll coordinate the details with FORESTIS, ODLES LODGE and our local partners, with your personalised proposal confirming exactly what's included and which experiences are private.
Can I extend my Dolomites journey or explore more of South Tyrol?
Absolutely. We recommend five nights or more to enjoy both mountain retreats and the experiences along the way, but the duration and itinerary can be tailored to your interests and preferred pace. You might spend longer at FORESTIS enjoying the spa, add more mountain walks or settle into ODLES LODGE for a few extra days of quiet. We can also extend your journey to other parts of South Tyrol, combining beautiful stays, local experiences and seamless transfers.
