Overview

Built into sandstone cliffs above the Bay of Palma, Cap Rocat is a five-star, adults-only hotel set within a former 19th-century military fortress. From the sea, the structure is almost invisible, folded into a protected headland within a 30-hectare nature reserve and 2km of marine-protected coastline. Bastions and watchtowers have been transformed into suites, while an atmospheric spa and two restaurants sit within the original structure. Some rooms are carved directly into the rock, deepening the sense of shelter and quiet. A stay is defined by elevation, privacy and long Mediterranean sunsets.

    Design
    Fortress reimagined

Architect Antonio Obrador carefully restored the 19th-century fortress over fifteen years, keeping its original character while turning ramparts, lookout points and stone corridors into living spaces. Built into the sandstone cliffs, the structure blends almost completely into the protected headland. The scale of the restoration is still felt in how the spaces connect. Vaulted passages and elevated terraces follow the fortress’s original paths, opening out to sea and sky.

    Water & Spa
    Salt, stone and quiet

Within the fortress walls, a saltwater pool sits beneath vaulted ceilings and a glass-domed roof. A hammam and treatment rooms are carved into the stone, creating a calm, enclosed space. Treatments draw on Ayurvedic principles, with massage and restorative rituals focused on balance. The hammam ritual — steam, cleansing and massage with aromatic soap — is a highlight. The contrast between cool stone and warm water deepens the sense of calm.

    Table
    Dining above the bay

La Fortaleza, the hotel’s signature restaurant led by chef Víctor García, holds two Repsol Suns and serves refined Mediterranean cuisine. For something more relaxed, Sea Club sits by the water at Caló de la Reina, offering seasonal dishes in a lighter, summery style. Both terraces look out across the Bay of Palma — one of the island’s most striking settings for dinner.

    Experiences
    Made for two

Experiences here are designed to be shared. Days might begin with private yoga or Pilates overlooking the sea, followed by time on the water — sailing along the Bay of Palma or swimming in quiet coves. Cultural experiences draw on the island’s traditions, from glassblowing and ceramics to seasonal food and craft. Everything feels considered and personal, shaped around time together rather than a set schedule.

    Place
    A hidden headland

Cap Rocat occupies its own peninsula along the coast of Cala Blava, around twenty minutes south of Palma. Built to guard the entrance to the Bay of Palma, the former fortress still feels protected and removed. The surrounding landscape lies within a Natural Area of Special Interest and an EU-designated Special Conservation Zone — a stretch of low scrub, exposed rock and open sea with very little development.

    Sleep
    Rooms & Suites

Rooms and suites occupy former bastions, lookout points and fortress chambers, some carved directly into the cliffside. Many have private terraces and plunge pools. Interiors combine natural stone with soft textiles and understated comfort. At night, the fortress settles into silence — the only sound is the sea below.
