Son Viscos works because everything feels like a home. Thick walls keep the house cool; shutters filter the morning sun. Interiors are layered with antiques and reclaimed pieces sourced through the owners’ long-standing presence on the island — Michael Roberts also runs Obsolete in Valldemossa — which explains the charmingly collected feel.
Hiking and cycling tails begin almost at the door, winding past olive terraces and dry-stone walls toward higher viewpoints above Valldemossa. A morning walk becomes the natural extension of breakfast. Return to read a book in the garden, rest beneath an olive tree, and the day has already been enough.
Son Viscos has been described as “the best B&B on the island." It’s set out on a huge pine table in the rustic kitchen laden with fresh bread, orange juice, cheeses, meats, yoghurts, cereals, and fruit and vegetables from the garden. Eggs are made to order. Lunch, dinner and picnics can be prepared in advance by a local chef. Valldemossa’s small restaurants are within easy reach.
Owner Michael and his manager Isabel want guests to feel at home, and nothing seems too much trouble. They’re on hand to offer advice about local attractions, restaurants, walking, and cycling routes. Small touches reinforce the homely feeling — an honesty bar in the lounge, shelves of guidebooks and magazines. Guests are welcome to bring food to eat on the terrace, which has music playing and candlelight in the evening.
The grounds unfold as a series of terraced gardens overlooking the Valldemossa valley. Old Moorish mills and water channels remain within the landscape — traces of the estate’s earlier life as a resting place for travellers crossing the mountains. Fruit trees, bamboo and tall shade trees soften the garden, while a small freshwater pool sits among the greenery. It’s a place to pause, read and relax in the shade of the trees.
Rooms are charming, each individual, with natural materials, antique furnishings and original features — one even has the mountain's rock emerging from the wall. Windows open to olive groves or rising slopes. Nights are deeply quiet.
Son Viscos sits just outside Valldemossa in the Serra de Tramuntana, around 25 minutes by car from Palma and Palma de Mallorca Airport.
The village centre is about 1.5 km away, a 15–20 minute uphill walk with lovely views across the valley.
We’d recommend hiring a car to explore the surrounding mountains and coast.
Son Viscos welcomes guests aged 13 and over. The hotel is small-scale; peaceful gardens and a relaxed atmosphere make it particularly well suited to couples and adults seeking a restorative countryside stay.
Wander into Valldemossa, walk through the surrounding Tramuntana mountains, explore Deià and Sóller, discover hidden coves or simply spend an afternoon among Son Viscos' gardens, bamboo grove and natural spring-fed pool. Your Wellness Traveller concierge can arrange experiences.
Valldemossa is within walking distance, while Deià, Sóller, Port de Sóller and the walking trails of the UNESCO-listed Serra de Tramuntana are all within easy reach.
Once an inn for mountain travellers, Son Viscos has been restored as an intimate five-room country house while retaining its traditional Mallorcan character. Historic Moorish mills, mature gardens and centuries-old olive groves connect the property to the wider cultural landscape of the Serra de Tramuntana. The hotel sources food locally, recycles wherever possible and uses energy-efficient systems throughout the property.
