Vidago belongs to another era, in the very best way. There’s something wonderfully reassuring about places that stay true to their essence. Guests still stroll through the gardens before dinner, linger over afternoon tea and come to the mineral springs that first made Vidago famous more than a century ago. The beautifully restored palace and contemporary thermal spa sit effortlessly alongside one another, honouring a tradition that feels just as restorative today as it did in the golden age of European spa travel.
A grand spa destination Long before the palace was built, people were already making the journey to Vidago for its celebrated mineral waters. Today, the estate still feels wonderfully complete, with sweeping gardens, mature woodland, elegant walking paths and one of Portugal's most iconic historic hotels creating a destination that invites you to spend your days outdoors. Every part of the estate reflects a tradition of travelling well and taking time to restore.
A timeless ritual The naturally mineral-rich springs remain at the heart of the Vidago experience. Once enjoyed through the grand tradition of 'taking the waters', they now flow into Álvaro Siza Vieira's beautifully contemporary thermal spa. Previously recognised as the World's Best Spa Hotel, the spa combines hydrotherapy, thermal circuits and restorative treatments with the healing qualities of Vidago's celebrated waters, creating an experience that honours more than a century of wellbeing tradition while embracing contemporary approaches to wellbeing.
The art of dining well Dining at Vidago reflects the same sense of timeless occasion found throughout the hotel. Seasonal Portuguese ingredients, regional wines and beautifully prepared dishes celebrate the flavours of northern Portugal, whether enjoyed in the elegant main restaurant or beneath the trees on a warm afternoon. Meals are unhurried, gracious and every bit as much a part of the experience as the spa itself.
Rooms and suites balance the elegance of the palace's Belle Époque heritage with contemporary comfort, offering peaceful views across the gardens, parkland or surrounding countryside. Refined without feeling formal, they provide restful spaces that perfectly complement the slower pace of life found throughout the estate.
Vidago Palace is approximately 90 minutes by car from Porto Airport. A hire car is recommended for exploring the Trás-os-Montes region and nearby Douro Valley.
Children are welcome, with spacious grounds, family-friendly facilities and outdoor activities making the estate suitable for guests of all ages.
Relax in the thermal spa, experience the mineral waters, play the championship golf course, walk through the historic gardens, enjoy afternoon tea, cycle the surrounding countryside or explore the nearby Douro and Trás-os-Montes regions.
Vidago village, Chaves, the Douro Valley, Peneda-Gerês National Park and the vineyards of northern Portugal are all within easy reach.
Vidago Palace carefully preserves one of Portugal's most important heritage hotels while continuing the long-standing tradition of protecting its natural mineral springs and surrounding parkland for future generations.
