There's something quietly comforting about stepping into a way of life that hasn't hurried to keep pace with the modern world. At Casas do Côro, centuries-old stone houses, cobbled lanes and long-standing traditions create the feeling that time has softened rather than stood still. Mornings unfold without urgency, meals linger over conversation and evenings are measured by the fading light rather than the clock. You leave with a renewed appreciation that life doesn't necessarily become richer by adding more to it. Sometimes it simply becomes better when we slow down enough to notice what's already there.
Marialva is one of Portugal's best-preserved historic villages, where medieval walls, granite houses and winding lanes speak of centuries of rural life. Rather than observing that history from a distance, guests live within it, discovering a place where architecture, landscape and community remain deeply connected.
Food reflects the traditions of Portugal's Beira Interior region, celebrating estate-grown produce, seasonal ingredients, local cheeses, olive oil and carefully selected Portuguese wines. Meals are designed to be lingered over, often shared across terraces and courtyards where conversation becomes as important as the food itself.
Walking trails, vineyard visits, quiet reading corners and afternoons free from agendas encourage a gentler relationship with time. There is no pressure to fill the day, only the invitation to let it unfold naturally. By the time you leave, it becomes easier to imagine carrying a little of that slower rhythm back into everyday life.
Each individually restored stone house combines original Beirã character with contemporary comfort, creating spaces that feel deeply rooted in the village's heritage. Thick granite walls, natural materials and quiet surroundings make every room feel less like a hotel and more like a home that has welcomed travellers for generations.
Hotel Casas do Côro is located in the medieval village of Marialva, around two and a half hours by car from Porto Airport and approximately two hours from Salamanca in Spain. A car is recommended for exploring the surrounding countryside and nearby historic villages.
Families are welcome, with a selection of spacious rooms and houses suitable for those travelling together. The relaxed village setting makes it particularly appealing for multi-generational stays.
Explore the medieval streets of Marialva, walk or cycle through the surrounding countryside, visit nearby vineyards and wineries, or discover the historic villages and castles of Portugal's Beira Interior region. Seasonal experiences, wine tastings and wellness treatments can all be arranged. Our concierge is happy to curate personalised local experiences.
Marialva Castle, the Côa Valley Archaeological Park, Castelo Rodrigo, the Douro wine region and the Serra da Estrela Natural Park are all within easy reach.
Casas do Côro has grown through the careful restoration of historic village houses, preserving the architectural heritage and cultural identity of Marialva for future generations. Local sourcing, seasonal produce and a deep connection to the surrounding landscape reflect an approach that values stewardship as much as hospitality.
