It doesn't take long before the village begins to feel familiar. Church bells replace alarm clocks, quiet stone lanes become part of your daily walk and candlelit evenings encourage conversations that linger a little longer. Nothing feels recreated for visitors. Life simply moves at a pace that has changed very little over the centuries. For a few days, life feels wonderfully uncomplicated, reminding you how much beauty can be found in simplicity, craftsmanship and community.
Perched high within the Gran Sasso National Park, Santo Stefano di Sessanio is one of Italy's most remarkable medieval villages. Once threatened by depopulation, it has become an internationally recognised example of thoughtful regeneration, where restoration has protected not only the buildings but also the traditions, craftsmanship and community that continue to give the village its identity.
Meals tell the story of Abruzzo through recipes that have been passed from one generation to the next. Local lentils, saffron, handmade cheeses and seasonal mountain produce appear on the table much as they always have, creating food that feels honest, deeply rooted and inseparable from the landscape and the people who continue to shape it.
Every room has been restored using original materials, traditional textiles and locally crafted furnishings, guided by historical research rather than passing trends. Modern comforts are quietly integrated, allowing the buildings to retain the warmth, simplicity and character that have defined village life for centuries.
Staying at Sextantio is about more than spending the night in a beautiful village. Artisan workshops, guided walks, seasonal celebrations and encounters with local makers invite you to experience traditions that are still very much alive. Rather than observing from the sidelines, you become part of the continuing story of a community that has chosen to protect its heritage by sharing it.
Rooms and suites occupy carefully restored homes scattered throughout the village, each with its own original character. Exposed stone walls, handwoven textiles, antique furnishings and soft candlelight create spaces that feel wonderfully authentic, making it easy to imagine life here as it once was.
Sextantio Albergo Diffuso is located in Santo Stefano di Sessanio within Gran Sasso National Park, around two hours by car from Rome and approximately 90 minutes from Pescara Airport. A car is recommended for exploring the surrounding mountains and hilltop villages
Families are welcome, although the historic nature of the village, cobbled streets and scattered accommodation may be better suited to older children and those with an interest in history, nature and culture.
Join guided walks through the medieval village, explore Gran Sasso National Park, meet local artisans, go truffle hunting or discover the region's remarkable food traditions. Hiking, seasonal festivals and nearby mountain villages offer further opportunities to experience the culture and landscapes of Abruzzo. Our concierge can also arrange personalised cultural and outdoor experiences.
Gran Sasso National Park, Rocca Calascio, Campo Imperatore, L'Aquila and the surrounding medieval villages of Abruzzo are all within easy reach.
Sextantio is internationally recognised for its pioneering approach to heritage conservation, demonstrating how thoughtful tourism can help restore historic buildings, support local craftspeople and sustain rural communities. Every stay contributes to preserving both the architectural and cultural identity of Santo Stefano di Sessanio for future generations.
