Antonino Cannavacciuolo and Cinzia Primatesta have created the kind of place that feels as though they’d want to spend time here themselves. The suites have proper living rooms and kitchens, the garden leads down to the water and little electric boats wait at the dock when you feel like heading out. Food is taken seriously, of course, but so are the simpler pleasures of swimming, lingering over lunch or spending an afternoon outside. It is a very personal expression of contemporary Italian hospitality: generous, relaxed and designed around enjoying where you are.
Lake Orta has a gentle, understated beauty, and LAQUA sits right on the water in Pettenasco, looking across to a densely wooded shore. Pretty Orta San Giulio is only a short boat ride away and everything feels close: morning swims, spontaneous trips across the lake, an afternoon wandering medieval lanes, then back to your own stretch of shoreline before dinner.
There’s a surprisingly modern edge to the intimate spa. One experience is deeply cocooning, with private heat, steam and aromatherapy followed by the wonderfully weightless sensation of floating in warm saline water. The other is short, cold and exhilarating, with just a few minutes inside the CryoSuite. Massage, beauty treatments, yoga and meditation offer gentler ways to restore.
Food is a big part of life at LAQUA. At Michelin-starred Cannavacciuolo by the Lake, Chef Giovanni Bertone brings Antonino Cannavacciuolo’s Mediterranean style to Piedmont, weaving local ingredients and his Neapolitan roots through three tasting menus. Broad windows and terrace tables keep the water ever-present, while priority access to three-Michelin-starred Villa Crespi nearby makes a few days here particularly tempting for anyone who loves to travel through food.
There is something wonderfully freeing about moving through this landscape. Paddleboard along the shoreline, head out in one of the little electric boats, try waterskiing or wakeboarding, or take paddleboard Pilates onto the water. Yoga, personal training, walking and cycling offer plenty more ways to move, all with Lake Orta and the wooded Piedmont hills as your constant companion.
Cinzia Primatesta’s eye for design really comes through in the accommodation. Floor-to-ceiling windows draw the landscape inside, while generous living areas, beautifully equipped kitchenettes and private gardens give many of the suites the ease of contemporary lakeside apartments. The secluded Boathouse has its own garden and direct access to the shore – your own beautifully private corner of Lake Orta.
LAQUA by the Lake is around 45 minutes by car from Milan Malpensa Airport, with Milan Linate and Turin airports approximately 90 minutes away. Pettenasco railway station is around one kilometre from the hotel, and private transfers can be arranged.
Families are warmly welcomed. Spacious apartment-style suites, kitchenettes and two-bedroom options make longer stays particularly comfortable, while babysitting and family-friendly watersports can also be arranged.
Explore Lake Orta by electric boat or with a private captain, paddleboard or swim from the beach club, wander the lanes of Orta San Giulio, hike or cycle through the surrounding hills, or make the most of Piedmont’s exceptional food and wine. Experiences can be arranged through your Wellness Traveller concierge.
Orta San Giulio, San Giulio Island, Sacro Monte di Orta, Mottarone and the wider lakes and mountains of Piedmont are all within easy reach.
LAQUA’s contemporary architecture has been designed with a close connection to its lakeside setting, using natural materials and generous glazing to bring the landscape into the experience. Seasonal local sourcing and electric boats offer thoughtful ways to enjoy Lake Orta and its surroundings.
