This has long been a place of healing. Fonteverde was once a sacred site centred around the springs. Archaeological discoveries beneath and around the thermal pools unearthed altars dedicated to deities associated with health and renewal, including Apollo, Asclepius and Hygieia. You feel the history in a subtle way – a place where water was linked to ritual, offering and belief. The landscape remains unchanged, with wide views, shifting light and open space and the same pull of water, warmth and stillness.
Fonteverde lies just outside the medieval village of San Casciano dei Bagni, surrounded by one of Italy’s most protected landscapes. The building stretches along a Renaissance portico commissioned by Grand Duke Ferdinando I de' Medici; a long, colonnaded structure originally built to shelter visitors to the springs. Beyond the breezy terraces, the terrain rolls gently toward vineyards, olive groves and distant hill towns, with the sense of space uninterrupted in every direction.
The thermal waters emerge naturally warm across a network of indoor and outdoor pools. The hydrotherapy experience moves through open-air basins overlooking the valley and enclosed pools shaped by light and colour with different temperatures that adjust the body. Spa treatments build on this foundation, from mineral-rich warm mud therapies to inhalation treatments and physiotherapy to the modern science of cryotherapy.
Dining is closely tied to the landscape, with local, seasonal ingredients and menus rooted in Tuscan and Mediterranean traditions. At La Corte, the atmosphere is relaxed, with dishes that lean towards light, nutritionally balanced cooking. Ferdinando I has a more formal setting, with a focus on refined interpretations of regional cuisine. Meals are nutritious and leisurely, served on the terraces or in softly lit dining rooms.
The Val d’Orcia lends itself to slow exploration. Walking and cycling routes begin nearby, winding through hills, vineyards and small villages. Horseback riding offers a different perspective on the terrain, while guided visits connect more directly to the region’s history – from Etruscan sites to medieval towns. Wine tastings, olive oil experiences and seasonal activities like truffle hunting add a cultural layer.
Rooms are classically styled, with soft palettes, traditional furnishings and views that open toward the surrounding countryside. The atmosphere is calm and understated, with an emphasis on space and natural light.
Fonteverde sits in southern Tuscany, close to the borders of Umbria and Lazio, and is best reached by car. The nearest airport is Perugia San Francesco d'Assisi Airport, around 1 hour 15 minutes away, while both Florence Airport and Rome Fiumicino Airport are approximately a two-hour drive. The final stretch passes through quiet countryside and small villages, with the landscape gradually opening into the wide, rolling hills of the Val d'Orcia. Having your own car allows for a flexible stay. There are also vintage cars that can be hired for a touch nostalgia while exploring the surrounding region.
Children are welcome, though the atmosphere is calm and better suited to adults and older children who can settle into the slower pace of the hotel. There are no dedicated kids’ facilities or organised programmes, and much of the experience centres around the thermal spa and quiet shared spaces. Families tend to use Fonteverde as a base for exploring the surrounding countryside and local activities.
The surrounding landscape offers plenty to explore. Walking, cycling and horseback riding routes begin nearby, winding through vineyards, olive groves and open countryside. The region is also known for its food and wine, with opportunities to visit local wineries, taste olive oils and, in season, join truffle hunting experiences. Cultural visits add another layer, from medieval villages to archaeological sites that reflect the area’s long connection to thermal waters. Experiences can be arranged through your Wellness Traveller concierge.
Fonteverde is well positioned for exploring some of central Italy’s most characterful towns. The nearby village of San Casciano dei Bagni is known for its historic thermal heritage and quiet, medieval streets. Within easy driving distance, Pienza offers Renaissance architecture and wide valley views, while Montepulciano and Montalcino are both known for their wine culture and hilltop settings. Chiusi adds a different perspective, with Etruscan history, underground tunnels and archaeological sites that speak to the region’s deeper past.
Set within the protected landscape of the Val d'Orcia, Fonteverde operates with a close connection to its environment. The thermal waters are naturally sourced and used across the pools, reducing the need for artificial heating, while the historic structure has been preserved and adapted rather than expanded extensively. The surrounding land remains largely untouched, and the kitchen draws on regional suppliers and seasonal produce, supporting local agriculture and keeping the experience rooted in place.
