There are beautiful hotels, and then there are places created with love. Vicarello belongs firmly in the second group. Every room, terrace, garden and quiet corner reflects the personality of the family who spent years bringing the castle back to life, creating an atmosphere that feels deeply personal from the moment you arrive. Perhaps that is why people speak about Vicarello with such affection. It feels like being welcomed into a home filled with stories, beautiful objects and people who genuinely want to share the place they have created.
Surrounded by vineyards, forests and olive groves, the estate enjoys sweeping views across the Ombrone Valley, one of Tuscany's quieter and most beautiful landscapes. Walking trails weave through the property, while the changing light across the hills provides a constant backdrop to life on the estate.
Every suite tells a different story. Antique furniture sits alongside handcrafted pieces, textiles collected during travels and objects chosen over many years by the Baccheschi Berti family. The result feels warm, eclectic and effortlessly elegant, with each room carrying its own unmistakable personality.
Food is woven into everyday life at Vicarello. Seasonal ingredients from the gardens, olive oil from the estate and wines from the vineyard inspire menus that celebrate the flavours of Tuscany. Cooking classes, wine tastings and long meals shared beneath the trees offer a natural way to experience the estate's generous spirit.
Each of the nine suites has its own distinctive character, blending centuries-old architecture with contemporary comfort and carefully chosen furnishings. Large windows frame the surrounding countryside, while private terraces and thoughtful details make every room feel like a place you'll want to return to.
Castello di Vicarello is approximately two hours by car from Florence and around two and a half hours from Rome. A car is recommended, allowing you to explore southern Tuscany's villages, vineyards and coastline at your own pace.
The estate welcomes older children, although its intimate atmosphere, romantic setting and peaceful surroundings make it particularly well suited to couples and adults seeking a slower escape.
Join the estate's cooking school, enjoy wine tastings, go truffle hunting, explore the vineyards on foot, relax by the infinity pools or unwind with a spa treatment overlooking the valley. Our concierge can also arrange horse riding, cycling and private cultural experiences throughout southern Tuscany.
Montalcino, the Maremma countryside, Saturnia's thermal springs and the Tuscan coastline are all within easy reach, offering a wonderful balance of food, wine, nature and culture.
The restoration of Castello di Vicarello has respected the history of the estate while embracing organic farming, seasonal produce and responsible stewardship of its vineyards, olive groves and surrounding woodland. Sustainability is not treated as an initiative here, but as part of everyday life.
