Abano's thermal mud has a story that begins long before the treatment itself. Clay from the Euganean Hills is immersed in local thermal water for at least two months, allowing a distinctive community of heat-loving microorganisms to develop. Research by the University of Padua and Pietro d'Abano Thermal Studies Centre has explored bioactive compounds produced during this maturation process and their anti-inflammatory activity. It's an age-old thermal tradition with some fascinating science behind it.
Abano Terme sits at the foot of the Euganean Hills, where thermal bathing dates back to Roman times. The hotel's five-acre park creates its own leafy world in the centre of town, with palms, tropical planting and three outdoor thermal pools open throughout the year. Beyond the gates, the Euganean Hills invite exploration, while Padua and Venice put two very different cultural days within easy reach.
At 3,800 sqm, Romanae Thermal Spa embraces the grandeur of ancient Roman bathing with columns, statues and more than 75 treatment stations. Abano's thermal water and mature mud underpin treatments for relaxation, recovery and healthy ageing, while Venezia Spa adds sauna, Turkish bath, ice and sensory showers. Outside, three thermal pools make bathing a year-round ritual, and Aqua Space can be reserved privately for an experience all to yourselves.
Chef Giacomo Dianin brings Venetian tradition together with contemporary cooking at Pietro d'Abano, where menus change with the seasons and local cheeses sit alongside house-made breads and focaccia. Nàiade offers a more intimate dining experience inspired by the landscapes of Veneto, while Etoile keeps lunch relaxed beside the thermal pools. And because wellness needn't rule out a proper cocktail, there's always the James Bond Bar.
Rooms embrace an exuberant kind of luxury, with Louis XV-style furniture, marble bathrooms, generous proportions and private balconies. Deluxe rooms start at around 53 sqm, while suites provide considerably more room to spread out. For the best sense of escape, choose a room overlooking the gardens and thermal pools.
