What stays with you is the feeling of returning through Mikro Papigo’s stone lanes after several hours in the mountains. Your boots are dusty, the air has sharpened your appetite and woodsmoke hangs lightly between the old stone houses. Back at the hotel, the spring-water pool, hammam and warmth of the sauna feel exactly right. The spa works so beautifully because it responds to the day you’ve just had, easing tired legs and letting the exhilaration of being outdoors settle into something calmer. Zagori gives the stay its energy; the hotel knows exactly how to help you absorb it.
Mikro Papigo sits within one of Europe’s most extraordinary protected landscapes, where dramatic gorges, alpine lakes and centuries-old stone villages remain remarkably untouched. Walking trails begin just beyond the hotel, leading towards the Vikos Gorge, Dragon Lake and quieter mountain paths that reveal both the geological drama and enduring traditions of Zagori. Here, exploration begins the moment you step outside.
The award-winning Veranda at 1700 celebrates the flavours of Epirus through traditional recipes prepared with organic ingredients, many grown in the hotel’s own gardens using authentic local seed varieties, including heritage potatoes cultivated within the Geopark itself. Homemade pies, mountain herbs, local cheeses and seasonal produce reflect the generosity of the region and the simple pleasures of eating well after a day outdoors.
The Eco Mountain Spa complements rather than competes with the landscape. Filled with spring water and designed around organic products and panoramic views, it becomes the natural place to return after long hours on the trails. Massage, hydrotherapy and gentle warmth soothe tired muscles, while the mountain air and quiet satisfaction of the day linger long after you’ve stepped inside.
Spread across a collection of beautifully restored stone buildings, the rooms and suites balance authentic Zagorian character with carefully chosen contemporary design. Looking out towards the Vikos Gorge or the surrounding forests, they feel less like hotel rooms and more like peaceful mountain refuges, ready for another day exploring one of Greece’s most remarkable landscapes.
Mikro Papigo is around 90 minutes by car from Ioannina Airport. A hire car is recommended for exploring Zagori’s villages, hiking trails and the wider Vikos–Aoös UNESCO Global Geopark.
Children are welcome, though the mountain setting and outdoor focus make the hotel particularly well suited to active couples, walkers and older families.
Hike the Vikos Gorge, climb to Dragon Lake, explore Zagori’s stone villages and bridges, raft the Voidomatis River or simply unwind in the Eco Mountain Spa after a day in the mountains. Experiences can be arranged through your Wellness Traveller concierge.
Vikos Gorge, Dragon Lake, the Voidomatis River, the Zagori stone bridges and the villages of Papigo, Monodendri and Aristi are all within easy reach.
Green Key certified, Mikro Papigo follows a long-standing commitment to environmentally responsible hospitality. Organic gardens, heritage seed varieties, composting, reduced plastic use and thoughtful resource management all support a way of welcoming guests that respects both the landscape and the traditions of Zagori.
