Overview

Beyond the monuments and grand plazas, Granada keeps its stories to itself. Behind plain walls lie hidden courtyards where the soft trickle of a Moorish aljibe echoes through the shade. Through ordinary doorways are sawdust-scented workshops, while higher in the hills, cave homes are carved into the landscape. Here you'll find the artists, makers and families who remain the beating heart of the city. On this journey, you'll share conversations, meals and late evenings with the people whose lives are woven into the fabric of these neighbourhoods. Alongside your trusted local host, you'll discover a side of Granada where little has been polished away.

Arrival
A warm welcome

Over mint tea in a tea house tucked into Calderería Nueva, you meet your local host. The Alhambra rises above rooftops, while brass lanterns cast shadows across walls lined with handwoven textiles and painted ceramics. Plans are deliberately left loose. There are old friends to call in on, and neighbourhoods best explored one street at a time.

Discovery
Where creativity lives

You set off on foot through the Albaicín, following steep stone lanes worn smooth by centuries of footsteps. Small workshops have doors standing open onto the street. A guitar waits for repair on a scarred wooden bench. A brightly coloured flamenco dress hangs half-finished beside an open window. The walk unfolds one conversation at a time.

Craft
The hidden pattern

In a small workshop, dusty and thick with the scent of timber and bone glue, one of Granada’s master taracea artisans continues to create the intricate Moorish wood inlay that has been part of the city’s identity for centuries. Stained fingers move along strips of wood, bone and mother-of-pearl, scraping away a layer of glue to reveal the intricate geometric pattern hidden beneath.

Rehearsal
Finding new steps

Your host introduces you to a contemporary flamenco choreographer whose work is shaping a new generation of performers. Inside their working studio, shoes rest beside the wall and chalk still traces the floor. A sequence is repeated and reworked as your choreographer explains how a turn, a pause or the strike of a heel can carry emotions that words sometimes cannot.

Welcome
Sacromonte hospitality

High on the slopes of Sacromonte you're welcomed by a local family for an informal supper on the terrace. Plates of local cheese, warm tortilla and jamón are passed around with glasses of wine. Friends and neighbours drift in and out, and conversation moves easily between family, music and life in Sacromonte as the sun sets over Granada below.

Rhythm
The music takes over

In one of Sacromonte’s intimate family caves, neighbours and guests gather for an evening of flamenco. There are no microphones, no stage and nowhere for the sound to escape. Guitars, voices and palmas gather momentum as the sharp strike of taconeo rebounds through the stone floor. The energy rises, spontaneous cries of ¡Olé! Cut through the room and without thinking your own hands find the rhythm.

Return
The walk home

The evening doesn’t finish with a bow or an encore; it simply dissolves into the hillside. Outside, the warmth of the cave gives way to cool mountain air. Guitars continue to drift somewhere behind you as neighbours linger with glasses of wine and easy conversation beneath the stars. Walking back down the rough tracks with your host, Granada spreads quietly across the valley below.

Reflect
The feeling that remains

Long after the music has faded and the narrow streets of the Albaicín have disappeared behind you, something of the city’s aliveness has a way of staying with you. In Granada, they have a word for this: duende. The name given to rare moments when music, movement and emotion become one. It cannot be described. Only felt.
