Overview

Ikaria is one of the world’s five Blue Zones, where people enjoy remarkably long healthy lives. Yet spend a few days here, and you quickly realise that longevity has never been the island’s ambition. Life is simply lived differently. On this journey, you’ll be welcomed into family homes, village kitchens and conversations that few visitors ever experience. Together, these encounters reveal that a long life is rarely built through extraordinary choices. Instead, it grows quietly from the way each day is lived.

Start your journey
Arrive
A village welcome

Every great journey begins with someone who knows a place intimately. On Ikaria, that’s your host. Having spent years building friendship across the island, they open doors to one conversation after another. A morning coffee becomes an introduction. Before long, you’re being welcomed into homes, workshops and village squares as though you’ve known people for years.

Belong
Gathering for lunch

Spend time with a mountain farming family who welcome you for lunch. Before long, you’re wandering the vegetable garden, chopping ingredients and laughing around the kitchen table as lunch slowly comes together. An ordinary day that becomes anything but ordinary, with generosity and time together at the heart of Ikaria life.

Discover
Wisdom of the hills

Your host introduces a respected herbalist who has spent a lifetime gathering from the landscape. Wander paths scented with wild oregano, sage and rosemary, learning how generations of islanders have turned plants into everyday infusions. As the mourning unfolds, your basket slowly fills with freshly gathered herbs.

Preserve
Morning conversations

In the village, elders gather beneath the shade, following a ritual they’ve shared for years. Introductions are brief before conversation wanders between family, friendship and the everyday life on Ikaria. You’re invited to try coffee made the local way. It’s a simple moment in good company that asks very little and gives a lot.

Restore
Sea, stone and springs

Later, your host leads you to one of Ikaria’s thermal springs. Here, warm red water bubbles up from underground and meets the cool Aegean. After a dip, lunch awaits at a family-run taverna, where there’s fresh fish, local wine and all the time in the world.

Gather
The long table

On your final evening, you gather with your host’s family along with neighbours and familiar faces you’ve met throughout the journey. Food is shared, wine is poured, and before long you’ll find yourself joining the dancing. At some point, you realise you’ve stopped feeling like a visitor. You’re simply another place at the table.

Reflections
Your time well lived

Ikaria’s greatest lesson was never about living longer. It was about living in a way that makes a long life possible. Warm bread shared around a family table, unhurried conversations, and faces that quickly became friends. Perhaps the richest life isn’t measured by how much we fit into our days, but by how fully we choose to live them.

Where you'll stay
At home on Ikaria

For this journey, we typically recommend characterful family run guesthouses ticked into Ikaria’s hillside villages or overlooking the Aegean. Unpretentious, welcoming and deeply rooted in the island, they’re the kind of places where breakfast stretches into conversation, neighbours stop to chat outside and it doesn’t take long before you’re greeted by name.
