Overview

Few places wear their history as naturally as Crete. Ancient settlements rest beneath clear coastal waters, shepherd families still return to the high pastures each summer and traditions shaped over centuries continue in village kitchens, workshops and around mountain tables. On this privately hosted journey through Eastern Crete, you’ll move between the coastline of Mirabello Bay and the villages, plateaus and high pastures of Lasithi, spending time with the people who continue to forage, make, cook, weave and gather much as generations before them did. Here, history isn’t something you simply visit. It’s part of everyday life.

Discover
The sunken city

Your journey begins on the coast near Elounda and Agios Nikalaos, where the water us remarkably clear. Kayaking and snorkelling across the bay, submerged ruins gradually become visible beneath the surface. Swimming and floating above traces of an ancient settlement, with stone structures shimmering through the clear water below, offers an extraordinary first glimpse into the many layers of Crete’s past.

Follow
The ways of the mountains

A small number of shepherd families still spend the summer living and making cheese in the high pastures of the Dikti Mountains. Your host leads you to a mountain settlement, where goats gather beside the stone mitato and fresh milk is stirred over the fire into warm mizithra. Over bread, olives and fresh cheese, conversation drifts between family life and the annual return to the mountains.

Gather
Knowledge of the land

When the season allows, head into the hillsides and olive groves with a local forager to gather wild horta, herbs and bitter greens using canvas bags and small knives. Back in a family kitchen, what you’ve gathered is prepared simply with local olive oil, lemon and fresh bread, sharing knowledge that still finds its way naturally from hillside to table.

Make
Shaped from the earth

In the mountain village of Psychro on the Lasithi Plateau, a local ceramicist creates the simple vessels that have been part of Cretan life for thousands of years. Hands shape wet clay on the wheel as familiar forms emerge, echoing objects found at ancient Minoan sites across the island. Take your own place at the wheel, turning earth into something useful.

Loom
Woven by hand

In the mountain village of Kritsa, traditional weaving still survives in the hands of local women who learnt the craft at home. With a weaver at her loom, the shuttle passes back and forth as you discover the meaning held within different colours and patterns before trying the simple movement for yourself. It’s a tradition built slowly, thread by thread, and carried from one pair of hands to another.

Share
Around the fire

High in the mountains, your host knows a small taverna that still prepares antikristo in the traditional way. Lamb is salted, secured onto wooden stakes and cooked slowly around an open fire. Plates are passed around the table, fresh bread is broken, glasses of local wine are poured, and stories drift easily between the fire and the table.

Celebrate
Songs with meaning

In some of Crete’s remote villages, mantinades – short, improvised poems – are still shared when friends and neighbours gather. Rarely experienced by visitors, you’re welcomed into one of these informal gatherings, where the sound of the lyra, improvised verses, clapping and conversation become part of the evening.

Reflect
Carried forward

It isn’t the age of these traditions that feels remarkable. It’s how naturally they find their place in modern life. Across centuries of change, Cretans have kept returning to many of the same simple acts: making things by hand, sharing food, passing on knowledge, and gathering together. Perhaps that’s the real test of time. Not whether something survives unchanged, but whether each generation still finds a reason to carry it forward.

Where you'll stay
Between mountain and valley

For this journey, we recommend Minos Beach Art Hotel, an intimate waterfront retreat set among gardens and rocky coves on the shores of Mirabello Bay. Low-rise bungalows and villas open towards the sea, while contemporary Cretan design, and impressive collection of art and beautiful waterside restaurants give the hotel a strong sense of place. With the water quite literally on your doorstep, it’s a wonderfully peaceful base for exploring the coastline, mountain villages and living traditions of Eastern Crete.
