Local insights, insider tips and practical information to help you plan your journey.
Where is Mount Etna in Sicily, and how do you get there?
Mount Etna rises above the eastern coast of Sicily, near the city of Catania and the beautiful town of Taormina. Europe's highest active volcano, it is surrounded by fertile vineyards, ancient villages, forests and dramatic lava landscapes. Catania Airport is the most convenient arrival point, and we can arrange private transfers to your accommodation on Etna's slopes, where your journey into Sicilian family life begins.
When is the best time to visit Mount Etna and experience Sicilian village life?
The traditions of Sicilian family life can be experienced throughout the year. May is particularly special, when villages on Etna's slopes celebrate their patron saints, including the remarkable Festa dei Santi Alfio, Filadelfo e Cirino in Trecastagni, with processions and gatherings that bring generations together. September and October offer the grape harvest, while spring and autumn are wonderful for exploring the volcano. We'd also recommend including a Sunday, when family lunches and gatherings are an important part of local life. We'll tailor your journey around the traditions and encounters available during your visit.
What makes Sicilian family traditions so special?
Family has always played a central role in Sicilian life, particularly in the rural communities surrounding Mount Etna. Several generations often remain closely connected through shared meals, family businesses, vineyards and traditions passed down over time. On this journey, you'll meet local families who continue to live and work together, discovering how these relationships provide a remarkable sense of continuity and belonging in a landscape that has been shaped by centuries of volcanic change.
Can we experience a traditional Sicilian Sunday family lunch?
Yes. One of the most memorable experiences of this journey is being welcomed into a local family home to share a traditional Sicilian meal. You'll discover how food, conversation and family rituals bring generations together, with recipes and stories passed around the table. If you'd particularly like to experience the rhythms of a Sicilian Sunday, we recommend including a Sunday in your travel dates so we can arrange the most authentic experience possible.
Is it safe to explore Mount Etna, and do I need hiking experience?
Mount Etna is an active volcano, but many areas can be explored safely with experienced local guides when conditions permit. Your journey may include walks across historic lava flows, volcanic landscapes and accessible lava caves. You don't need to be an experienced hiker, although some terrain can be rocky or uneven. Routes will be selected according to your interests, abilities, weather conditions and any restrictions relating to volcanic activity.
Are the family visits and experiences private, and will we have a local host?
Yes. This is a privately arranged Signature Journey, not a group tour. Your visits to family vineyards, shared meals and local encounters are organised around you and your travelling companions. A trusted local host will introduce you to the families and communities who make this experience possible, while our destination team coordinates your accommodation, private transfers and activities. Your personalised proposal will confirm the hosting arrangements and everything included in your journey.
Can I extend my Mount Etna journey or combine it with other parts of Sicily?
Absolutely. We recommend four days or more to fully enjoy this journey, but the duration and itinerary can be tailored to your interests, dates and preferred pace. You might choose to spend longer exploring Etna's vineyards and villages, enjoy a coastal stay near Taormina or discover more of Sicily's extraordinary food, history and landscapes. We'll create a personalised itinerary with carefully selected accommodation, private experiences and seamless transfers throughout.
