Local insights, insider tips and practical information to help you plan your journey.
Where is Nisyros, and how do you get there?
Nisyros is a small volcanic island in Greece's Dodecanese, between Kos and Tilos in the southeastern Aegean. It's a world away from the busier Greek islands, with whitewashed villages, dramatic volcanic landscapes and a wonderfully unhurried pace of life. Most visitors arrive by ferry from Kos, with connections also available from other Dodecanese islands. We'll help plan your journey and arrange transfers and local transport around the island.
When is the best time to visit Nisyros?
May, June, September and October are lovely months for exploring Nisyros, with more comfortable temperatures for walking around the volcano and discovering its villages. Summer brings a different kind of energy, with traditional panigyria bringing islanders together for music, food and dancing. The most important is Panagia Spiliani in Mandraki, celebrated from 6–15 August, while June brings the festival of Agios Nikitas, the island's patron saint. We'll help you choose the season that best suits the experiences you'd like to enjoy.
Is the volcano on Nisyros still active, and can you walk inside the crater?
Yes. Nisyros is an active volcanic system, and its enormous caldera contains several hydrothermal craters, including Stefanos, where steam rises from fumaroles and geothermal activity continues beneath the surface. When access is permitted, you can descend into the crater with a knowledgeable guide and experience this extraordinary landscape up close. The ground can be hot and unstable in places, so it's important to stay on permitted routes and follow your guide's instructions.
What is the natural geothermal sauna in Emporios?
At the entrance to the mountain village of Emporios, a small cave is naturally warmed by geothermal steam rising through the volcanic rock. Locals have known about this unusual source of warmth for generations, and the cave is sometimes described as a natural sauna. It's a fascinating reminder that the volcano's presence can be felt far beyond the crater itself. Your local host can explain its history and assess whether it's suitable to enter during your visit.
Why is the village of Emporios being brought back to life?
Emporios was once a thriving mountain village overlooking Nisyros's volcanic caldera. After the devastating 1933 earthquake and decades of emigration, many of its stone houses were left empty. More recently, returning islanders and new residents have begun restoring old buildings and bringing fresh life to the village. Spending time with local artists and makers offers a glimpse into this new chapter, where traditional architecture, creativity and a strong connection to the island are helping shape its future.
What makes Nisyros different from other Greek islands?
Nisyros offers something increasingly rare: the chance to experience island life in a place where the natural world still has a very visible influence on everyday decisions. The volcano shapes the landscape, geothermal heat rises through the earth, and fishing and boating remain closely tied to the weather. Beyond the dramatic scenery, you'll discover traditional villages, local cooking and people whose lives are deeply connected to the island. It's a fascinating place to explore what it means to live with the elements rather than try to control them.
Are the experiences private, and is everything arranged for us?
Yes. This is a privately hosted Signature Journey, with experiences arranged around you and your travelling companions rather than a conventional group tour. We'll organise your accommodation, time with a volcanologist, local artists and hosts, private boat experiences and transfers throughout. Our trusted destination team will coordinate the arrangements on the ground, adapting activities where necessary to suit the weather and volcanic conditions. Your personalised proposal will confirm exactly what's included.
Can I extend my Nisyros journey or combine it with other Greek islands? Absolutely. We recommend three days or more to enjoy this journey, but the duration and itinerary can be tailored to your interests and preferred pace. You might choose to spend longer exploring Nisyros's villages and volcanic landscapes, add more time on the water or combine your stay with neighbouring Kos or other Dodecanese islands. We'll bring together characterful accommodation, private experiences and seamless transfers to create a journey that feels entirely your own.
