Local insights, insider tips and practical information to help you plan your journey
Where is Menorca, and how do you get there?
Menorca is the easternmost of Spain's Balearic Islands, lying in the Mediterranean between Mallorca and the coast of Catalonia. Known for its beautiful coves, peaceful countryside and traditional farming landscape, it's a wonderfully varied island that remains easy to explore. Menorca has its own international airport near Mahón, with flights from several European cities and connections through mainland Spain. We'll arrange your accommodation, private transfers and local experiences throughout your journey. When is the best time to experience
Menorca's living landscape?
Spring is particularly lovely for this journey, when the countryside is green, wildflowers cover the fields and bees and other pollinators are busy among the island's herbs and blossoms. Summer brings long days, vineyard visits and opportunities to spend time with local fishermen. September and October offer warm seas, quieter villages and the changing rhythms of the agricultural year. Even November has its surprises, including the delicate purple flowering of locally grown saffron. We'll shape your journey around the people, produce and traditions of the season.
Why is Menorca a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve?
Menorca was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1993, recognising its remarkable natural diversity and the relationship between people and the environment. The island is home to wetlands, forests, coastal habitats, farmland and important marine ecosystems. But its story isn't simply about protecting beautiful places. Traditional farming, carefully managed landscapes and efforts to protect the surrounding sea all play a part. This journey introduces you to the people whose everyday work helps keep that relationship alive.
What makes Menorca's traditional farming landscape so special?
Travel through Menorca and you'll notice fields divided by beautiful dry-stone walls, often stretching as far as the eye can see. Known as parets seques, these walls have been built and maintained over generations, creating the enclosed pastures that characterise the island's countryside. Traditional farms, called llocs, are closely connected to Menorca's dairy and cheesemaking heritage. Spending time with local farmers reveals how much care goes into maintaining a landscape that can appear so effortlessly beautiful.
Can we learn to make traditional Mahón-Menorca cheese?
Yes. Mahón-Menorca cheese has been made on the island for centuries and is protected by its own designation of origin. At a traditional dairy, you'll discover how fresh curds are wrapped in a cotton cloth called a fogasser, pressed into their distinctive square shape and left to mature. The rind is traditionally rubbed with oil or paprika, giving the cheese its characteristic colour. Where available, we'll arrange a hands-on experience with a local cheesemaker, followed by a tasting of cheeses at different stages of maturity.
Can we spend time with Menorca's farmers, beekeepers and fishermen?
Absolutely. Meeting the people who work with Menorca's land and sea is at the heart of this journey. Depending on the season, you might gather vegetables with a local grower, learn about beekeeping and the importance of pollinators, or spend time with a fisherman whose livelihood depends on understanding the sea. These privately arranged encounters offer a chance to discover the knowledge, patience and everyday decisions behind the island's food traditions. Fishing experiences will depend on weather, availability and local regulations.
Why is Menorca such a special place for stargazing?
Menorca was recognised as a Starlight Reserve and Starlight Tourist Destination in 2019, reflecting its commitment to protecting the night sky from light pollution. Away from the island's towns, the darkness can reveal extraordinary views of the stars, particularly on clear, moonless nights. For this journey, an evening meal in a peaceful countryside setting offers a beautiful opportunity to experience the night sky. We'll choose a suitable location and, where possible, plan around the moon and weather conditions.
Are the experiences private, and is everything arranged for us?
Yes. This is a privately hosted Signature Journey, with experiences arranged around you and your travelling companions rather than a group tour. We'll organise your accommodation, local hosts, visits to farms and producers, guided experiences and transfers throughout. Our trusted destination team will coordinate the arrangements on the ground, with activities shaped around your interests and the season. Your personalised proposal will confirm exactly what's included.
Can I extend my Menorca journey or combine it with other experiences?
Absolutely. We recommend three days or more to enjoy this journey, but the duration and itinerary can be tailored to your interests and preferred pace. You might choose to spend longer exploring Menorca's countryside, enjoy additional time beside the sea or discover the island's prehistoric Talayotic heritage. We can also combine your journey with a beautiful coastal or countryside wellness stay, taking care of the accommodation, private experiences and transfers along the way.
