Local insights, insider tips and practical information to help you plan your journey.
Where is La Donaira in Andalusia, and how do you get there?
La Donaira is a beautiful 700-hectare estate in the Serranía de Ronda, near the whitewashed village of El Gastor in southern Spain. Surrounded by ancient oak woodland, olive groves, vineyards and open pasture, it's around 30 minutes from Ronda. Málaga and Seville are convenient arrival airports, and we can arrange private transfers to the estate, where you'll stay in a beautifully restored Andalusian cortijo.
When is the best time to experience life on the land at La Donaira?
Life at La Donaira follows the seasons, and there's always something happening on the estate. Spring brings wildflowers, busy bees and fresh growth in the gardens, while summer is a wonderful time for gathering sun-ripened vegetables, herbs and fruit. Autumn brings the grape and olive harvests, along with cooler days for exploring the countryside. Even winter has its pleasures, with seasonal cooking, time in the medicinal garden and cosy evenings around the table. We'll shape your experiences around what's growing, being gathered and made during your visit.
What makes La Donaira's approach to regenerative farming so special?
La Donaira is a working organic farm where caring for the soil, plants and animals is part of everyday life. Its gardens use mixed planting, crop rotation and compost from the estate's animals to help build healthy soil and encourage biodiversity. Vegetables grow alongside flowers and aromatic herbs, while livestock graze across the wider landscape. Spending time with the growers reveals how much thought goes into creating abundance while working with nature rather than against it.
Can I help harvest vegetables and cook with La Donaira's chefs?
Absolutely. One of the pleasures of this journey is following ingredients from the garden to the table. Depending on the season, you might gather ripe tomatoes, peppers, herbs and other produce alongside the estate's growers before joining a chef in the kitchen. You'll discover how the day's harvest inspires the menu, learn simple Andalusian cooking techniques and enjoy the dishes you've helped prepare. No previous cooking experience is needed.
What is La Donaira's bee bed experience?
La Donaira's bee bed offers an unusual way to experience the world of bees without disturbing the colony. You'll lie on a specially designed bed above a working hive, separated from the bees by a protective barrier, while listening to their gentle humming and feeling the subtle vibrations beneath you. The warmth, scents and sounds create an absorbing sensory experience. You'll also learn about the importance of bees to the estate's gardens and wider landscape. We'll check suitability with the team, particularly if you have a bee allergy.
What can I discover in La Donaira's medicinal garden?
Inspired by traditional monastery herb gardens, La Donaira's medicinal garden is home to more than 300 varieties of aromatic, edible and traditionally medicinal plants. Walking among rosemary, lavender, sage and lesser-known botanicals with an estate expert, you'll discover how plants are grown and used in cooking, infusions and natural skincare. You can also take part in a hands-on soap-making workshop, using natural farm ingredients to create something of your own to take home.
Can I learn to make kombucha and other traditional fermented foods?
Yes. La Donaira offers a hands-on kombucha workshop where you'll discover how tea, sugar and a living culture gradually transform through fermentation. You'll learn how to care for the culture, explore the flavours that develop over time and take a starter home to continue the process yourself. It's a lovely example of the journey's central idea: some of the most satisfying things we make require patience, attention and a little time.
What makes La Donaira's wines different from other Andalusian wines?
La Donaira grows Petit Verdot and Blaufränkisch grapes on its own estate, while also working with winemakers across Andalusia who share its interest in organic farming and traditional varieties. Its wine collection includes natural, biodynamic and organic wines, alongside distinctive styles such as orange and ancestral wines. With the estate sommelier, you'll explore how different grapes, growing conditions and winemaking methods shape scent and flavour, discovering a more adventurous side of Andalusian wine culture.
Are the experiences private, and is everything arranged for us?
This is an estate-hosted Signature Journey, thoughtfully designed around you and your travelling companions. Working closely with La Donaira's team, we'll coordinate your accommodation, farm visits, cooking workshops, botanical experiences, wine tastings and other arrangements. Many activities can be organised privately, while some estate experiences may be shared with fellow guests. Your personalised proposal will confirm exactly what's included and which experiences are private or shared.
Can I extend my La Donaira journey or combine it with other experiences in Andalusia?
Absolutely. We recommend four days or more to enjoy this journey, but the duration and programme can be tailored to your interests and preferred pace. You might spend longer exploring the gardens and countryside, enjoy additional time with La Donaira's Lusitano horses or make the most of the estate's spa and wellness experiences. We can also combine your stay with Ronda, the white villages of Andalusia or a beautiful coastal retreat, taking care of the arrangements along the way.
