Overview

The Laurisilva is a surviving part of an ancient subtropical forest ecosystem that once spread across southern Europe and North Africa millions of years ago. On this journey, you’ll step beneath its canopy with people who know it best. Walking through mist, moss and flowing water, you’ll discover a forest that feels intensely alive. As you spend time here, it’s hard not to feel part of the natural world, nourished by many of the same forces that have shaped this extraordinary island.

Start your journey
Mist
Listen to the living forest

Before sunrise, your forest host leads you into the forest while it still holds the night’s mist. Conversation fades as the path disappears beneath ancient laurel trees. You pause for a gentle guided meditation. A light breeze stirs the leaves. Water drips softly through the branches. The more you listen, the more the forest begins to make itself heard.

Breath
Trees that breathe clouds

These ancient laurel trees don't wait for rain. They gather moisture directly from passing clouds, releasing it one tiny drop at a time onto the forest floor, feeding the springs, streams and levadas that nourish the island. With gentle movement and breathwork, drawing in the same mist that gives life to the forest, it becomes impossible not to feel part of that same living cycle.

Water
The journey of water

Walking beside the levadas, you’ll follow the water through the forest, pausing beside mountain springs to drink from the source. Your local guide knows every inch of the forest, and you’ll discover how water gathered from the clouds has sustained villages, gardens and vineyards across the island for generations.

Create
Foraging with the seasons

Depending on the time of year, you’ll gather seasonal herbs and edible plants alongside a local herbalist. Foraging is a beautiful way to understand an older relationship with the forest, where gathering began with gratitude and taking only what was needed.

Herbs
Ancient healing wisdom

Preparing simple infusions and traditional recipes together, your local herbalist shares traditions that have healed for many centuries. Medicinal plants, forest herbs, sacred springs, and remedies have passed from one family to the next. Long before forests were scientifically understood, ancient people recognised they were places that sustained life.

Gather
A forest table

On your final evening, in a quiet clearing, a long table awaits beneath the ancient trees. Over warming soup, fresh bread, local cheeses, wild herbs, and local wine, the conversation flows as naturally as the birdsong and the sound of water gently flowing through the forest.

Music
Beneath the ancient trees

As dusk settles, lanterns are lit, and new faces gather among the ancient trees. Local musicians and storytellers share ancient folklore, seasonal traditions and stories of a time when forests were places of healing, reverence and quiet transformation. Gentle music and a simple moment of gratitude beneath the trees bring the evening gently to a close.

Awaken
Breakfast above the clouds

Before sunrise on your final morning, the path climbs steadily above the canopy towards Madeira's high ridges. As the forest gives way to open sky, breakfast awaits overlooking a sea of cloud drifting across the Laurisilva below. One by one, the mountain peaks emerge, before the mist slowly lifts from the forest beneath. For a few quiet moments, the island feels suspended between earth and sky, before another day begins.

Reflect
Invisible things that nourish us

The forest never asks for anything. It simply continues the quiet work of sustaining life, one drop of water, one leaf and one season at a time. Perhaps that's why time spent here feels so restorative. It gently turns your attention back towards the simple things that sustain us too: clean air, fresh water, nourishing food, meaningful conversation and time in the natural world. The things we notice least are often the ones we need most.
