Where is MANNA Arcadia in Greece, and how do you get there?
MANNA is tucked into the fir-covered mountains of Arcadia, in the central Peloponnese, at around 1,200 metres above sea level. It's close to the traditional mountain villages of the Mainalon region, where forest trails, rivers and stone-built settlements offer a very different side of Greece. Athens is the most convenient international gateway, with the journey taking approximately 2½ to 3 hours by road. We'll arrange your private transfers, accommodation and local experiences throughout.
When is the best time to experience Arcadia's forests and mountain traditions?
Autumn is particularly special in Arcadia, when the forests change colour, wild mushrooms appear after the rains and the cooler weather makes walking through the mountains a pleasure. Spring brings flowing rivers, fresh greenery and beautiful conditions for exploring the Lousios Gorge. Summer offers a welcome escape from the heat of the Greek coast, with cooler mountain air and long days outdoors. Winter can be wonderfully atmospheric, with snow sometimes covering the higher slopes and fires burning at MANNA. We'll shape your journey around the season and the experiences available.
What is the Arcadian Ideal, and why has it inspired people for centuries?
In ancient Greek poetry and later European art and literature, Arcadia came to represent an imagined life of simplicity, harmony and closeness to nature. Shepherds, forests, flowing water and an unhurried rural existence became symbols of a world beyond the complications of everyday life. The real Arcadia is a mountainous region with a rich history and living traditions. This journey brings the idea back to earth, through time spent with the people who grow, gather, cook and make their lives among its forests and villages.
What makes MANNA's history as a mountain sanatorium so special?
MANNA occupies a beautifully restored sanatorium built in 1929, when mountain air, rest and seclusion were considered important parts of recovery. The building was established through the efforts of Anna Mela, whose story remains part of the hotel's identity today. Its high ceilings, generous windows and peaceful forest setting reflect that original purpose. Almost a century later, MANNA has been reimagined as an intimate mountain retreat, where the surrounding landscape continues to shape the experience.
Can we go truffle hunting in Arcadia, and when is the best season?
Yes. Arcadia's forests are home to different truffle species, with availability changing throughout the year. Autumn and winter are particularly associated with truffle hunting, although some varieties can be found in warmer months. For this journey, you'll explore the forest with a local guide and Bianca, a trained Lagotto Romagnolo truffle dog, learning how truffles grow beneath the trees and how they're found. Any discoveries depend on the season and natural conditions, with a tasting arranged as part of the experience.
What makes the Lousios Gorge and its cliffside monasteries so special?
The Lousios Gorge is one of the Peloponnese's most beautiful wild landscapes, where a fast-flowing river cuts through steep forested cliffs. Ancient paths lead towards remarkable monasteries, including Philosophou and Prodromou, the latter built dramatically into the rock face. These monasteries have been places of Orthodox worship for centuries and remain part of the region's spiritual heritage. Walking through the gorge offers a wonderful combination of nature, history and moments of quiet reflection.
Do I need to be an experienced hiker to enjoy this journey?
Not necessarily. Arcadia offers everything from gentle forest walks to more demanding mountain and gorge trails, and we'll tailor the experiences to your fitness and interests. Some paths in the Lousios Gorge are steep, rocky or uneven, with sections requiring a reasonable level of mobility. Your local guide will choose suitable routes and adapt the itinerary to the weather and conditions. Cold-water swimming is optional and will only be included where the river is safe and access is permitted.
Can we learn to cook traditional Arcadian dishes and discover local herbs?
Absolutely. Food and the land are closely connected in Arcadia, and this journey offers several ways to experience that relationship. At MANNA, you can spend time with the chef preparing a mushroom kritharoto, a Greek dish made with orzo pasta. You'll also visit local growers and herbalists to discover seasonal plants, traditional preparations and essential oil distillation. At Arcadiani, you'll have the opportunity to make bread and prepare a meal with local hosts, sharing the results around the table.
Are the experiences private, and is everything arranged for us?
Yes. This is a privately hosted Signature Journey, with accommodation, local guides, culinary experiences and transfers arranged around you and your travelling companions. We'll coordinate your time at MANNA, forest explorations, cooking experiences and visits to local producers, with our trusted destination team taking care of the arrangements. Specialist encounters and activities will be confirmed according to availability, with your personalised proposal explaining exactly what's included.
Can I extend my Arcadia journey or combine it with other parts of Greece?
Absolutely. We recommend four days or more to enjoy this journey, but the duration and itinerary can be tailored to your interests and preferred pace. You might spend longer exploring Arcadia's mountain villages, enjoy more time at MANNA's spa or discover other parts of the Peloponnese. We can also combine your mountain escape with a beautiful coastal stay, bringing together characterful accommodation, private experiences and seamless transfers throughout.
