Local insights, insider tips and practical information to help you plan your journey.
Where is Abadía Retuerta in Spain, and how do you get there?
Abadía Retuerta lies beside the Duero River in Castilla y León, between Valladolid and the historic wine town of Peñafiel. Surrounded by vineyards, woodland and open countryside, it's around two hours by road from Madrid and approximately 30 minutes from Valladolid. The estate is home to a beautifully restored 12th-century abbey, now the five-star LeDomaine hotel. We can arrange private transfers from Madrid or other Spanish destinations.
When is the best time to visit Abadía Retuerta?
Every season offers a different way to enjoy the estate. September and October are particularly exciting, when the grape harvest brings the vineyards and winery to life. Abadía Retuerta offers a private harvest experience, including picking grapes and traditional grape treading. Spring brings fresh growth to the vineyards and lovely conditions for exploring the estate, while summer is made for long evenings in the cloister gardens and stargazing beneath the Duero skies. November offers a quieter atmosphere, perfect for lingering over wine, wonderful food and time in the spa. The hotel closes for part of the winter, typically from mid-December to mid-February, so we'll confirm opening dates when planning your stay.
What makes Abadía Retuerta's history so special?
The abbey was founded in 1146 by Premonstratensian monks, who cultivated vineyards and helped establish a winemaking tradition that would shape the estate for centuries. Wine production later declined and the vineyards were eventually removed, before a remarkable revival began in the late twentieth century. Today, the restored abbey, replanted vineyards and contemporary winery tell a story of people continuing to find new ways to care for a place with more than eight centuries of history.
What makes Abadía Retuerta's wines different from other Ribera del Duero wines?
Although Abadía Retuerta lies in the Duero Valley, its vineyards sit just outside the Ribera del Duero wine denomination. In 2022, the estate received its own Protected Designation of Origin, recognising the distinctive character of its land and wines. Its vineyards are divided into individual plots, each with different soils and growing conditions. During your private winery experience, you'll discover how these differences shape the wines, from the estate's Selección Especial to its individual Pago wines.
Can we meet the winemakers and taste wine straight from the barrel?
One of the pleasures of this journey is going beyond a conventional wine tasting. With an estate wine expert, you'll explore the vineyards, discover how the wines are made and visit the gravity-fed winery and barrel rooms. We can request a more personal tasting, including barrel samples where available, to explore how wines develop as they mature. Any meeting with a particular winemaker or special cellar access will be confirmed when we plan your journey.
What makes dining at Michelin-starred Refectorio so special?
Refectorio occupies the abbey's former dining hall, where centuries-old stone arches now frame one of the region's most celebrated restaurants. Chef Marc Segarra draws on the ingredients and culinary traditions of Castilla y León, giving local produce a contemporary interpretation. The restaurant holds a Michelin star and a Michelin Green Star, recognising both its cooking and its approach to sustainability. For this journey, we can explore opportunities to meet the estate's culinary team and discover the gardens and producers behind the menu.
What is the Spa Sommelier experience at Abadía Retuerta?
At Santuario Wellness & Spa, the idea of a sommelier extends beyond wine. A Spa Sommelier helps you choose a personalised combination of treatments, oils and sensory experiences according to your preferences and how you'd like to feel. It's a lovely way to complement time spent exploring the vineyards and enjoying the estate's food and wine, with space to slow down and enjoy some dedicated time for yourself.
Is this journey suitable for couples and special occasions?
Absolutely. Abadía Retuerta is a wonderful setting for couples who enjoy beautiful places, exceptional food and wine, and experiences that are worth taking time over. Whether you're celebrating an anniversary, planning a special escape or simply looking for a few days together, we'll shape the itinerary around your interests. You might prefer more time in the spa, private wine experiences, a memorable dinner or simply the pleasure of doing very little in extraordinary surroundings.
Are the experiences private, and is everything arranged for us?
This is an estate-hosted Signature Journey, thoughtfully designed around you and your travelling companions. Working closely with the Abadía Retuerta team, we'll coordinate your accommodation, vineyard visits, winery experiences, dining, wellness treatments and other arrangements. Many experiences can be arranged privately, while others, such as special salon evenings or estate gatherings, may be shared with fellow guests. Your personalised proposal will confirm exactly what's included and which experiences are private or shared.
Can I extend my stay at Abadía Retuerta or explore more of the Duero Valley?
Absolutely. We recommend four days or more to enjoy this journey, but your stay can be tailored to your interests and preferred pace. You might spend longer enjoying the estate's spa, gardens and restaurants, add more wine experiences or explore the surrounding Duero Valley. Nearby Peñafiel is particularly interesting for its medieval castle and wine heritage, and its annual grape harvest celebrations bring the town to life in early autumn. We can also combine your stay with Valladolid, Segovia or Madrid, taking care of the arrangements along the way.
