Local insights, insider tips and practical information to help you plan your journey.
Where is Milos, and how do you get there?
Milos is a volcanic island in Greece's Cyclades, in the southwestern Aegean Sea. It's known for its extraordinary coastline, colourful fishing villages and landscapes that look unlike anywhere else in Greece. You can reach Milos by domestic flight from Athens or by ferry from Piraeus and neighbouring islands. We'll arrange your transfers, accommodation and private experiences so you can concentrate on discovering the island.
When is the best time to explore Milos by land and sea?
June and September are particularly lovely for this journey, with warm swimming conditions and plenty of opportunities to explore by boat. July and August bring long sunny days, but the Meltemi winds can make some stretches of coastline difficult to reach. May and October can also be beautiful, especially for walking and photography, although the sea may be cooler and conditions less predictable. Your skipper will plan each day's route around the wind and swell, finding the best places to explore safely.
Why does Sarakiniko look like the surface of the moon?
Sarakiniko's extraordinary white landscape was formed from soft volcanic deposits that have been sculpted over time by wind, rain and the sea. Its smooth curves, pale rock formations and deep blue water create an almost otherworldly setting, particularly in the changing light of early morning. Exploring with a local nature photographer gives you time to notice the textures, shadows and details that make this one of Milos' most remarkable places.
What makes Kleftiko and Milos' sea caves so special?
Kleftiko, on Milos' southwestern coast, is famous for its towering white rock formations, natural arches and sea caves carved by the waves. Its name is linked to the Greek word for thieves, reflecting stories of pirates who once sheltered along this remote coastline. The area is best explored by boat, with opportunities to swim and snorkel in remarkably clear water when conditions allow. Your local skipper will know which passages and coves are safe to explore on the day.
Is Milos better explored by boat or on land?
Both, and that's what makes this journey so rewarding. By land, you'll discover Sarakiniko's sculpted landscape, the colourful volcanic cliffs of Paliochori, the old mining landscapes of Cape Vani and the traditional syrmata, or fishermen's boat houses, at Klima. By sea, an entirely different coastline opens up, with secluded beaches, dramatic arches and hidden coves that are difficult or impossible to reach on foot. Combining the two reveals just how varied this small island really is.
Do I need to be a strong swimmer to enjoy the boat experiences?
Not necessarily. Much of the pleasure comes from being on the water, discovering the coastline and enjoying places that can only be reached by boat. Swimming and snorkelling are optional, and we'll tailor the activities to your confidence and ability in the water. Some sea caves and rocky swimming spots require stronger swimming skills, and your skipper will advise on what's suitable. Cliff jumping, where permitted and considered safe, is entirely optional.
Are the boat trips and experiences private, and is everything arranged for us?
Yes. This is a privately hosted Signature Journey, not a group island tour. You'll explore with your own skipper and spend time with a local nature photographer, with experiences shaped around your interests and preferred pace. We'll arrange your accommodation, private boat experiences, local guides and transfers throughout, with our destination team coordinating everything on the ground. Your personalised proposal will confirm exactly what's included.
Can I extend my Milos journey or combine it with other Greek islands?
Absolutely. We recommend four days or more to enjoy this journey, but the duration and itinerary can be tailored to your interests and preferred pace. You might choose to spend longer exploring Milos' beaches and volcanic landscapes, add more time on the water or combine your stay with nearby islands such as Kimolos, Sifnos or Folegandros. We'll bring together beautiful accommodation, private experiences and seamless transfers to create a journey that feels entirely your own.
