Local insights, insider tips and practical information to help you plan your journey.
Where does this journey take place, and what is the Athens Riviera?
This journey brings together two sides of Athens: the ancient city and its beautiful Mediterranean coastline. You'll explore historic neighbourhoods and landmarks before following the Athens Riviera south through seaside communities such as Vouliagmeni towards Cape Sounion, where the Temple of Poseidon stands above the Aegean. We typically recommend combining a city stay with a peaceful coastal retreat, with private transfers and experiences arranged throughout.
When is the best time to visit Athens and its Riviera?
May, June, September and October are wonderful months for combining Athens' ancient sites with time by the sea. Summer brings outdoor performances, cultural festivals and lively evenings along the Riviera, although July and August can be very hot for exploring archaeological sites. Spring is particularly lovely for walking through the city, while September often brings warm swimming conditions and a renewed energy as Athenians return from their summer holidays. We'll shape your journey around the season and the experiences you'd most enjoy.
Can we visit the Acropolis privately before the crowds arrive?
We can arrange a private guided visit to the Acropolis, timed for the earliest available admission so you can enjoy this extraordinary landmark before the busiest part of the day. Walking among the Parthenon, Erechtheion and ancient temples with an expert guide brings the stories of Athens to life in a wonderfully personal way. The Acropolis normally opens at 8am, and any special access outside public opening hours would need to be arranged and confirmed separately.
What makes the Sanctuary of Artemis at Brauron so fascinating?
Hidden on the eastern coast of Attica, Brauron was once an important sanctuary dedicated to Artemis, the goddess associated with nature, childbirth and the protection of young people. In ancient Athens, girls took part in rituals known as the arkteia, or 'playing the bear', marking their passage towards adolescence. Today, the sanctuary and its small archaeological museum offer a fascinating glimpse into how earlier generations understood life's transitions. It's a quieter, lesser-known place that connects beautifully with this journey's exploration of change and what endures.
Why visit the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion?
Standing high above the Aegean at the southern tip of Attica, the Temple of Poseidon has watched over these waters since the fifth century BC. For ancient sailors, Poseidon was the powerful god whose favour they sought before crossing the sea. Today, the temple's marble columns and spectacular coastal setting make it one of Greece's most beautiful places to watch the changing light. Visiting with a local storyteller adds another dimension, connecting ancient myths with the choices and questions that still shape our lives.
Can we swim and explore the Athens Riviera by private boat?
Absolutely. The Athens Riviera offers beautiful rocky coves, sheltered bays and clear waters within easy reach of the city. We can arrange a private boat experience along the coast, with opportunities to swim, enjoy a relaxed picnic and discover places loved by local Athenians. Limanakia, near Vouliagmeni, is known for its rocky swimming spots and beautiful water. The exact route and swimming locations will depend on the weather, sea conditions and your preferences.
Are the experiences private, and will we have local hosts throughout?
Yes. This is a privately hosted Signature Journey, not a group sightseeing tour. Your guided visits, conversations with local experts, coastal experiences and family encounters are thoughtfully arranged around you and your travelling companions. Our trusted local hosts will introduce you to different sides of Athens, while our destination team coordinates accommodation, private transfers and experiences throughout. If you'd prefer a dedicated guide to accompany you for the entire journey, we can arrange that too. Your personalised proposal will confirm everything included.
Can I extend my Athens journey or combine it with the Greek islands?
Absolutely. We recommend four days or more to enjoy this journey, but everything can be tailored to your interests, dates and preferred pace. You might spend longer discovering Athens' contemporary culture, enjoy a few extra days on the Riviera or continue to the nearby Saronic islands. Hydra, for example, makes a wonderful addition, with its car-free harbour, artistic community and slower island rhythm. We'll take care of the accommodation, private experiences and transfers along the way.
