Portugal is a country where nature stays close. Atlantic air rolls in from the coast, rivers weave through mountains and vineyard valleys, and mineral-rich water rises naturally from the ground. Out in the islands, volcanic landscapes add another dimension, from Madeira’s sheer green mountains to the steaming earth of São Miguel.
The relationship between land and sea finds its way to the table too. Fish fresh from the Atlantic, wine grown along river valleys, citrus from the south, and rice and olive oil from landscapes cultivated for generations. There’s a simplicity to eating well here, and real pleasure in knowing something of where it came from.
Water has long played its part in wellbeing. Generations have travelled to Portugal’s thermal towns to take the mineral waters, a tradition that now sits alongside beautiful spas, restorative retreats and sophisticated wellness programmes. Beyond them, the landscape offers its own invitation to swim, surf, walk and cycle. Spend enough time here and the line between travelling well and simply enjoying Portugal becomes rather hard to find.
